Joyce Elizabeth Campbell

Joyce Elizabeth Campbell, 81, of Dyersburg, died Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at her residence. Born July 28, 1935, she was the second child and oldest daughter of the late Bernie F. and Lois Riggs, in Dyer County, TN. Joyce was educated in the primary schools of Dyer County and attended Dyersburg High School. She received her GED at Joliet Junior College, Joliet, IL. Her working career began at K.W. Rogers at the age of sixteen. Later she worked at HIS Clothing in Tiptonville before moving to Joliet, Illinois, where she was employed by Sears, GAF Corporation, and Zayers. After returning to West Tennessee, she worked at Walmart and operated the J and J Restaurant. She also worked at Zanes in Jackson, Armstrong Windows and Dollar General. Her conscientious application on the job and outstanding work ethic soon won her the favor of her supervisors and co-workers and led to promotions and honors including being named Employee of the Month at Zanes. Joyce became a Christian and joined the Junction Church of God in February 2004. She was dedicated to God and to her church and her strong faith sustained her in her final days as she continued to worship with the Dyersburg Church of God. In October, 2011, she moved into the Wesley Retirement Home. Her greatest joy was in exercising her culinary skills for the benefit of her fellow residents and showing off her skill at working jig-saw puzzles. Her lemon cakes earned Blue Ribbons at the Dyer County fairs and her peanut brittle has been enjoyed throughout the county.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 15, 2016 in the Chapel of Curry Funeral Home conducted by Janice Couch and Brother Robert Davis. Interment will be private.

Bernard Carmer

Chester Bernard “Cotton” Carmer, 90, of Dyersburg, died Saturday, October 1, 2016 at Dyersburg Manor. Born September 7, 1926, he was the son of the late John and Mary Scheina Carmer. Mr. Carmer was a first generation American as his parents were immigrants from Poland in the early 1900s. Cottons parents moved to Dyersburg from Oswega, New York in 1929 in conjunction with the opening of the old Dyersburg Cotton Products. Mr. Carmer was a lifelong member of Holy Angels Catholic Church of Dyersburg, an avid gardener and a master craftsman in woodworking. He was known affectionately by all his friends as “Cotton”. He was a graduate of Christian Brothers College, Memphis, TN with a degree in engineering. “Cotton” was an Air Force veteran and a fifteen year employee of Dyersburg Fabrics.

Mr. Carmer was preceded in death by his father and mother, John and Mary Carmer, his sister Constance Carmer Taylor, and his brother-in-law Dr. David Taylor. Dedication to his parents and sister was a deep passion of “Cotton”.

Grace Lynn Phelps

Grace Elizer Phelps passed away in Nashville, TN at St.Thomas Hospital on October 1, 2016 from a lethal, spontaneous brain hemorrhage at the age of 57. Grace was born on July 9, 1959 in Jackson, TN to Georgia and Thomas Elizer. She grew up in Bells, TN - baptized and raised in the Bells United Methodist Church and graduated from Bells High School where she was active in 4-H as well as multiple drama and music groups. She went on to receive her bachelors degree from Lambuth University where she met many dear friends and her husband, Keith. She was active in her sorority, Alpha Omicron Pi, and served as a vocalist for many music groups on campus. Keith and Grace married at Bells United Methodist on March 14, 1981 and had two children, Dustin and Catherine. The couple moved to Covington where Grace worked in fashion merchandising, human resource management, and executive recruitment before accepting the call to ministry and being ordained as a Deacon of the United Methodist Church in 2011. Since her ordination, she has worked as the Minister of Program and Outreach at Covington First United Methodist Church. The Bread of Life and Good Samaritan Fund ministries - dreamed of, organized, and managed by Grace - has become a remarkable outreach of Gods love and providing grace by meeting the needs of the thousands of families in the Covington and surrounding areas. Grace was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who loved fiercely and without reservation. She was a loving friend, advisor, and a shepherd to many. Visitation for Grace will be held on Monday, October 3, 2016 at Covington First United Methodist Church from 4:00-8:00 p.m. and Tuesday, October 4, 2016 from 12 Noon until 1:30 pm. Lucky is survived by his wife: Gloria Diane (Strachn) Humphreys , one daughter: Melinda (Randy) Hutcherson of Halls, TN and one son: Bubba (Beth) Humphreys of Halls, TN; Brother of three sisters: Brenda Carter of Southaven, MS, Sharon Rose of Olive Branch, MS and Mary Katherine Noblin of Memphis, TN, and four brothers: Robert Humphreys of Camden, TN, Johnny Humphreys of Redding, CA, Lee Roy Humphreys of Gibson, TN and Jerry Humphreys of Memphis, TN,; He also has four grandchildren. Seth Humphreys, Maddie Hutcherson, Alex Hutcherson, Hayden Humphreys. Predeceased by a brother, William Carol "Bubba" Humphreys and a sister Jean Mitchison. A graveside service will be held 1:30 pm on Thursday, September 15 at Archers Chapel Cemetery, 356 Archers Chapel Rd., Halls, TN with Bro. Allen Grant officiating. Burial will be in Archer's Chapel Cemetery, Halls on Thursday, September 15 following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Heart Association. Doris Stallings Welborn of New Albany, Mississippi, passed away on September 8, 2016. Doris is survived by her husband of 63 years, Sterling Paul Welborn, Jr, her daughter Suzanne Welborn Jortner of Dallas, TX, and her son Sterling Paul Welborn, III (Amy) of New Albany, MS. In addition, she is survived by her grandchildren Katie Mackenzie Jortner of Washington, D.C., Grant Jortner of Dallas, TX, Drew Welborn, John Wright Welborn, and Laura Ruth Welborn all of New Albany. She is also survived by five nieces and nephews in Dyersburg along with her great aunt Marilyn Kylce Cook of Birmingham, AL and their extended families. She was preceded in death by her sister and brother-in-law, Ann & Pat Roberts and her son-in-law Tom Jortner.

Doris was the daughter of Edwin Obediah Stallings and Cornelia Klyce Stallings. She was a longtime resident of Dyersburg, TN. Doris was a loving mother and grandmother, which led her and Paul to move to both Birmingham, AL and New Albany, MS to be close to their children and grandchildren.

Bill Finley, 75, of Dyersburg, died Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at Baptist Memorial Hospital East in Memphis. Born August 29, 1941 to the late Faye Wheeler Finley and Maxine Evans Finley, he was a retired sales manager for Kalium Chemical Company. Bill was a member of St. Marys Episcopal Church, president of the Dyersburg Municipal Golf Association and president of Pioneer Lake Association. His family and his grandson were his greatest treasures. A gracious and generous man, he was loved and admired by all who knew him. Bill was an avid golfer, hunter and horse enthusiast.

Donald Keith Baker

Donald Keith Baker of Dyersburg died peacefully Friday evening, September 2nd after a long and full life of 84 years. Born January 30, 1932 during the depths of the Great Depression in Tigrett TN to Isaac Hassell and Mary Martha Johnson Baker, "Buddy" or "Bud" Baker was the youngest of six children. He was preceded in both life and death by sisters Charlotte Elaine Rice (1920-2008), Dorothy Ann (1926-1926), Jane LaNelle Patterson (1930-2012) and brothers James Jasper (Jim 1922-1978) and Thomas Johnson (Toby 1924-1948).

He was a devoted Christian, son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. Known for his calm demeanor, dry sense of humor, and unwavering honesty, Bud spent essentially his entire working career at Dyersburg Fabrics (Dyersburg Cotton Products or The Mill). East Dyersburg Methodist Church was his church home for over 60 years where he enjoyed lasting and true friendships. Following retirement from the Mill, he mowed the church lot, took homebound friends out for long drives down country roads, and was a reliable Red Coat volunteer at Dyersburg's hospital for many years.
