John "Coach" Sammons, Jr, age 66, of Halls died Thursday, February 13, 2014 at Dyersburg Regional Hospital of Dyersburg, TN. John was born November 28, 1947 in Murray, KY. He is the son of the late John Irby Sammons Sr. and Paula Sue (Copland) Pierce. Mr. John was an educator and coach for many years in the local school systems until his retirement. He is survived by his wife: Sharry Jo (Thornton) Sammons , one daughter: Kim Jordan of Newbern, TN and one son: John Thomas Sammons of Clarksville, TN; his mother Paula Sue (Copland) Pierce and Stepfather Bill Pierce ; Brother of one sister: Lynn Claspell of Newburg, IN and one brother: Steve Sammons of Paris, TN; He also has four grandchildren. Kelsey Jordan; Sesiley Jo; Sebastian Sammons; Sadie Sammons. Mr. John was recognized as a Kentucky Colonel. He also was an avid University of Kentucky and St. Louis Cardinal Baseball fan. The funeral will be held 2:00 pm on Monday, February 17, 2014 at Halls First United Methodist Church,, Halls, TN with Rev. Barbara Blackmon-Fortune officiating. He was a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Division serving two terms in Vietnam. He attended the Dyersburg School System and Memphis State University. Joe Mack Wood, 81, of Dyersburg died Thursday, January 16, 2014 at Jackson Madison County General Hospital. He was the owner of Joe Wood Printing Company. Joe was a member of First Baptist Church, Charter member of Breakfast Rotary Club of Dyersburg where he was awarded the Paul Harris Fellow, member and former Lt. Governor of the Dyersburg Civitan Club, former member of Dyersburg Jaycees, a booster sponsor and was very active in many fundraising activities where he cooked and served his famous fried potatoes and onions. He was a Korean War Veteran. The Wood family will receive friends Tuesday, January 21th from 10:30 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 21, 2014 in the Chapel of Curry Funeral Home with Reverend Mike Hickman officiating. Mr. Charles E. Rice, 84, of Dyersburg, TN died Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at Dyersburg Regional Medical Center. He was Church of Christ, an avid reader and lover of good music. He was an Army Veteran of the Korean War. Before entering the Army he was employed by the Frances Theatre of Dyersburg. Coming back to Dyersburg in 1956, Charles returned to the Frances and later when Bel-Aire Lanes (now J.C. Lanes) was built worked for both the theater and the bowling lanes. In 1979 Charles and Shirley purchased Ray's Liquors in Newbern. Funeral services for Mr. Rice will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 3. 2014 in the Chapel of Curry Funeral Home with Mr. Gary McGill officiating. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Dyersburg, TN. Curry Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
