Dorothy Fowlkes Montgomery

Mrs. Dorothy Fowlkes Montgomery was born to the late Robert and Frances Gee on November 26, 1919 in Dyersburg, TN. In 1938, Mrs. Montgomery attended Mississippi Synodical College in Holly Springs, Mississippi and later continued her studies at Belhaven College in Jackson, Mississippi. Returning to Dyersburg, she worked as a Secretary in the Ewell Weakley and Clark Moss Law firm, and later with the Farm Security Administration's regional office in Raleigh, North Carolina. At the encouragement of her Father, she returned to Dyersburg where she married Jefferson Davis Fowlkes and both secured a position with Proctor and Gamble Defense Corporation in Milan, Tennessee. After WWII they returned to Newbern, TN to raise their family. In 1955 she, her husband Jeff, and her uncle George Gee, started Fowlkes & Gee Construction Company. In 1968 Mrs. Montgomery worked for the Tennessee Department of Welfare in both Child and Adult Divisions. In 1970 she started working for the newly built Dyersburg State Community College as Secretary to the Head Librarian. She retired from DSCC in 1985. She married the late Jack Montgomery of Newbern, TN in 1985. Mrs. Montgomery was a devoted 4th generation family member of First United Methodist Church in Dyersburg, TN. She was persistent in getting all of her children to church on time. At FUMC she served on the Administrative Board, the Board of Stewards and was a member of the Alma Potts Sunday School Class. She enjoyed tennis, golf, roller skating and snow sledding down Elm Street. She rarely missed a dance when the big bands played in West Tennessee. In 1941, Mrs. Montgomery became a charter member of the Dyersburg Cotillion Club and was active in a number of bridge clubs. For 18 years she served as a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts and was a member of the Boy Scouts of America Alumni Family. Funeral services for Mrs. Montgomery will be 1:00 pm, Saturday, December 14, 2013 in the Chapel of Curry Funeral Home with interment to follow in Fairview Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 5 - 7 pm, Friday, December 13, 2013 at the funeral home. Curry Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Pallbearers will be Jeff Fowlkes, Will Fowlkes, Cole Fowlkes, Tipton Fowlkes, Nick Dycus and Paolo Amarena. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be David Winters, Gene Hall, Robert Hall, Dan Fowlkes, John Fowlkes, Jimmy Latham and John Andrew Fisher. She is preceded in death by husbands Jefferson Davis Fowlkes and Jack Montgomery and her two brothers, Bobby and Zack Gee. She is survived by her sister Sally Fowlkes and husband Dan; six sons: Jeffrey Fowlkes and wife Theresa, Robert Fowlkes and wife Annie, Marion Fowlkes and wife Nelda, Bill Fowlkes and wife Anita, Zack Fowlkes and wife Claudette and Larry Fowlkes; nine grandchildren: Sebrina Dycus, Stephanie Winters, Elizabeth Amarena, Jeff Fowlkes Jr, Tipton Fowlkes, Callie Latham, Will Fowlkes, Zadie Fowlkes, and Cole Fowlkes; eight Great-Grandchildren: Cameron Pugh, Laken Price, Lauren Dycus, Connor Dycus, Isabella Amarena, Gabriele Amarena, Bianca Amarena, and Addison Sides; and one Great-Great Grandchild Brody Maitlan. She is also survived by her step-children: Linda Vickers, Bill Montgomery, and Tom Montgomery. She was preceded in death by her step-daughter Mary Hodge.
