He is survived by his wife Patricia "Pat" Steiger Viar; three daughters, Mary Jane Viar (Debbie) of Memphis, Vicki Viar (Dave) of Nashville, and Laura Viar Wallace (Doug) of Farmington, MO; one son, Sam Viar, Jr. (Tammy) of Dyersburg; two sisters, Marjorie Viar Craft of Laurel, MS, and Sally Viar Thompson of Mansfield, TX; three brothers, States W. Viar of Pomona, CA, Paul Viar of Shelby Township, MI, and John Viar of Humboldt, TN; and one grandchild, Drew Goodwin of Chapel Hill, NC.
