Mr. Herb Bivens, age 77, of Chapel Hill, Tennessee, died Monday, August 14, 2023 at his home in Chapel Hill. Mr. Bivens was born in Dyersburg, Tennessee and was the son of the late Hershel Elmer and Thalia Olds Pugh Bivens. Herb was a graduate of Union University in Jackson, Tennessee where he received his Bachelor of Science degree. There, he was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. Upon completion of college, Herb entered the telecommunications industry and was the business manager for Crockett Telephone Company, and later, United Telephone Company in Chapel Hill where he retired after 37 years of service. During that time, he served on various state and national telecommunication trade associations, including president of Tennessee Telecommunication Association and Opastco. Herb was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing, playing golf and farming. He was very active in community activities including the Chapel Hill Lions Club, Ducks Unlimited, Friendship Jaycees, First Farmers and Merchants Bank Advisory Board, helped organize and participated in many charity golf tournaments on the local, state and national levels. Herb served as a deacon and former Sunday school teacher during his 37 years as a member of Smyrna Baptist Church in Chapel Hill. Herb is survived by his wife of 58 years, Becky Bivens, Chapel Hill, TN; children, Rebecca Bivens Wilson, Lewisburg, TN, Terri Lynn Bivens (Brett) Lowe, Christiana, TN, Michael (Jocelyn) Bivens, Lewisburg, TN; sister, Anneta Bivens (Alan) Deal; brother, Thomas E. (Donna) Bivens; grandchildren, Aleah Lowe, Emily Bivens (Mason), Matthew Bivens, Lucas Bivens, Amber Bentley, Brayden Bentley; great grandchildren, Arya Simmerly, Archer Simmerly, Grayson Bentley; a host of cousins, nieces and nephews. Family members will receive friends on Wednesday, August 16, 2023 from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Lawrence Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, August 17, 2023 at 1:00 pm from the chapel of Lawrence Funeral Home with Pastor Mark Smith and Rev. Tim McGehee officiating. A visitation will also be held on Friday, August 18, 2023 at Friendship Baptist Church, Friendship, TN from 11:00 am until 1:00 p.m. with services to follow at 1:00 p.m.at the church with Rev. Mary Lou Willoughby

Mary Lou Autry was born September 17, 1933, at Burnt Mill Ferry in the old boarding house of Fay & Hunter's Mill. She lived by the Obion River until she was about five years old, then her small family pulled up stakes and moved to a short lane called Knapp in the Peony Ridge neighborhood. At that Time, Knapp was still a country route paved only with gravel and no street lights in sight. It was a world filled with pastures, flowers, and lightning bugs. Her parents and uncles built a new home with the assistance of one professional carpenter helping with the details. Her mother, who wore jeans before they were fashionable with women, did the electrical work, while her father and uncles worked with hammers and saws. Both her father, "Tom" Autry, and her mother, "Dot", were already employed at the cotton mill when they married, so their move was one step closer to work. The new community on the outskirts of town was quickly filling up with relatives of her father, but soon "Dot's" mother, stepfather and niece Ruth also began building a house on part of the land the family had acquired. It was more like a small farm or commune, than what you see now in a typical city neighborhood. A few years later the family would be complete with the birth of Cheryl the couple's second and youngest daughter.

Jane Hinson Cole, 78, of Dyersburg, died Thursday, July 13, 2023 at her residence. Born May 13, 1945, she is the daughter of the late Darrell and Dorothy Allison Hinson. Jane lived out her faith as an active member of Dyersburg First United Methodist Church, participating in bible studies and small groups throughout the years. She was a retired 2nd grade teacher for both the Memphis City School system and the Dyersburg City School system. After retiring she volunteered as a HOST tutor at Dyersburg Primary School and a mentor with Transitions of Dyer County. She had a love for tennis, golf, volleyball, cheerleading, the Memphis Grizzlies, and being the biggest fan on the sidelines for all her children and grandchildren.

Ricky is survived by four sons: Ricky Odell Jones Jr of Virginia Beach, VA, Kevin Jones of Hastings, MN, Bret Jones of Jackson, TN and Dakota Jones of Macomb, IL,; Brother of three sisters: Delores King of Jackson, TN, Mary Ann Elmore of Friendship, TN and Anne Payne of Gibson Wells, TN, and two brothers: Benny Harold Moody of Lexington, TN and Terry Moody of Lexington, TN.
