Dorothy Avery Cox

Dorothy Avery Cox, age 93 of Gates Tennessee died on April 30 in Dallas, Texas. She was the oldest daughter of Thomas Wilbur and Duette Doerr Avery. Dorothy Cox was an accomplished musician and piano teacher in Memphis, TN and Plano, TX for more than 60 years. She served as pianist at Frayser Baptist Church and received her Masters degree from Memphis State University. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, James O. Cox, Jr., her eldest son, James O. Cox, III and great grandson, Jack Michael Smith. Dorothy was a loving sister, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is survived by her sister Velma Anne Chisholm of Tennessee; her children, Meredith Cox of Santa Monica, CA, Michael Cox of Fort Worth, TX, Patricia Avery of Dallas, TX and Melody McCary of Plano, TX. She also leaves her grandchildren Nicole Cox, Courtney Smith, James Cox IV, Christopher Cox and Matthew Cox as well as great grandchildren Meredith Daniel, James V, Wyatt Christopher, Matthew Avery and Ethan Russell. Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 pm, Monday, May 7 at Gates Baptist Church, 85 Wardlow Street W, Gates, TN. The funeral service is scheduled for 2:00 pm Monday, May 7 at Gates Baptist Church, 85 Wardlow Street W, Gates, TN. Burial will follow in the Gates Cemetery.
