She was an avid reader, spending her time at the local library and was a fan of investigative television shows. She enjoyed gardening and sharing the strawberries that she grew. Her Christian faith showed through her attendance of local church services and watching church broadcasts later in life.

Dr. Keith Legan

December 13, 1932 – May 27, 2025

Dr. Keith Legan, 92, of Dyersburg, TN died Tuesday, May 27, 2025 at Jackson Madison County General Hospital in Jackson, TN. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Marcus Legan and Edith Luranda Blackburn, his daughter, Sandra Thompson, his grandson Brian Busch and his sister Wilda Billings.

He graduated from Kennett High School in 1950. He played trumpet in the high school band and played on the Kennett High school football, baseball and track team. He held the high jump record at Kennett High for 17 years. Dr. Legan attended the University of Missouri-Columbia majoring in chemistry and graduating in 1954. He went on to medical school at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He did internship and residency at several places including the University of Missouri, the Naval Hospital in Oakland, California and ultimately finishing his general surgery residency at the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital in Bronx, NY. Dr. Legan had a long military career as a physician serving initially in the Air Force in Waco, Texas, Oakland, California and Tainan, Taiwan. He left the Air Force and went into private practice in Kennett, Missouri from 1966 through 1980. After this he decided to continue military service with the US Navy. He served over the next 20 years at many bases and on many ships. His stations included Norfolk, VA, Jacksonville, FL, Bethesda, MD, Millington, TN, San Diego, CA, and Naples, Italy. He served on the USS Nimitz, USS Kennedy and USS Tarawa. He also served in the first gulf war, Operation Desert Storm. He attained the rank of Captain in the US Navy and received many awards for his service. He retired from the Navy and Medical practice in 2000 and moved to Dyersburg, TN in 2001 where he lived for the next 23 years.

Rev. Herbert Clyde Thompson, Jr., of Dyersburg, passed away Sunday, May 18, 2025 at Jackson General Hospital. Clyde was born May 27, 1947 in Jackson TN to the late Herbert Clyde Thompson, Sr. and Dorothy Thompson. Through the years, he worked in insurance sales and positions with Colonial Rubber and Dr Pepper-Pepsi of Dyersburg. Later in his life, he began a career in car sales that spanned 52 years, mostly with Delta Auto Sales. His most important work began when he was ordained to Gospel Ministry, preaching for 42 years at Parrish Chapel Baptist Church near Friendship. In his free time, Clyde enjoyed fishing and coaching teams in local church and girl's softball leagues and was an avid and accomplished golfer. His devotion to his family is lovingly celebrated.

Clyde is survived by his wife, Janie Mae Thompson, his daughter Amy Kolwyck and husband, Chris, his brothers Brad Britton and wife, Linda, Mike Thompson and wife, Shelia and Barry Thompson and wife, Camille and sisters Shelia Epperson and husband, George and Missy Thompson and several nieces and nephews. He was greatly loved as "Pop" and "Poppy" by his grandchildren, Brad Kolwyck and wife, Kelly and Bethany Green. Janice was a devoted wife and mother, who enjoyed all aspects of work around her home. She was an accomplished cook, seamstress, upholsterer and did many of her own home repairs including electrical and plumbing work. Outside of her home, she worked for many years in production with Thomas Lighting Company in Dyersburg. She and her husband, Billy J. Taylor were charter members of Three Oaks Chapel Baptist Church. In her later years, she loved time spent caring for her grandchildren in the years before they started school.

Janice is survived by her daughters, Cheryl Mathis and husband, Tom and Janene Burkhead and husband, Joel, all of Dyersburg, a brother, Ronnie White and sisters Libby Davis, Mary Blalock, Brenda Spangler and Lynn Batey and was loved as "Grandmaw" by her grandchildren, Mallory Jackson, Cara Hassell, Kristen Lanier, Ally Burkhead and Zane, Jack & John Mathis. Her volunteer work extended to the American Cancer Society and numerous other community organizations, where she was always known for her smile and encouraging words. Betty Rutledge Cooper

Betty Cooper, affectionately known to hundreds of students as "Mrs. Betty," passed away peacefully on the morning of May 4, 2025, in her hometown of Dyersburg, Tennessee. She was 89.

Born in December 1935 and raised in Dyersburg, Betty began playing the piano at the age of seven. What started as a childhood pursuit eventually grew into a lifelong calling. Over the span of more than three decades, she taught piano to over 600 students, each of whom she touched with her deep passion for music, patient instruction, and caring spirit.

Juanita Humphrey Walk, age 82, of Dyersburg, TN, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 4, 2025, at West Tennessee Healthcare Dyersburg Hospital.

Born on January 19, 1943, in Golden, MS, she was the beloved daughter of the late Curtis and Missouri Lentz Humphrey. Juanita dedicated 35 years of her career as a computer operator for A.B. Dick in Chicago, IL. She was a cherished member of the Trinity Lutheran Church. Juanita had a passion for playing bingo, traveling, and adored her two dogs, Heidi and Dusty. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Virginia Lou Wynn

November 13, 1942 – May 04, 2025

Mrs. Virginia Lou Wynn, of Wynnburg, passed away Sunday, May 4, 2025 at West Tennessee Healthcare-Dyersburg Hospital. Lou was born November 13, 1942 to the late Lewis Alfred and Virginia Burrow Councill. She attended Lambuth University and was involved in Greek life on campus. During her life, she spent many years working in and managing her family's store, the fondly remembered "Councill's Five & Dime". She loved music and knew the latest dance moves. Her husband played trumpet in a band and she would travel with him to gigs in the area. Her home in Wynnburg and the town of Tiptonville were near and dear to her. For many years, she was involved in the planning of high school class reunions in Tiptonville. She was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church. In retirement, she enjoyed time spent with friends socializing and playing Bridge and was a lover of animals, especially her dogs.

Lou is survived by her sister, Mrs. Carrie Councill Riedmeyer, and nieces Ms. Carrie Lee Stetler and Mrs. Mary Stetler Haley and husband, Richard, all of Memphis and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Rebecca Weiler and husband Rick, of Dallas, TX. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Paul Prentiss Wynn, Jr., her parents and a nephew, Roland Guest Stetler, III. Her family would like to thank Mary Farmer and the devoted team of ladies that cared for Ms. Lou; Kim, Patty, Beverly, Delila and Margie.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Stanley "Stan" Lewis Paige, a beloved father, grandfather, educator, and friend, who left this world on May 3, 2025, at the age of 71. Born on July 11, 1953, in Ripley, Tennessee, Stan was a beacon of love and kindness, whose life was defined by his unwavering devotion to his family, faith, and community.

Stan was the cherished son of the late Lewis Franklin Paige and the late Ella "Ellaouise" Louise Newman Paige. Preceded in death by his parents, he leaves behind a loving legacy that continues through his two sons: Brandon Paige (Miranda) of Perry, GA, and Jeremy Paige (Amanda) of Jackson, TN. His spirit also lives on in his three adoring grandchildren: Klaeton Welch of Memphis, TN, Lauren Brown of Ripley, TN, and Audrina Paige of Perry, GA, who were the light of his life and whom he loved dearly.

Ms. Bertie Baker Lemonds, of Dyersburg, passed away Thursday, May 1, 2025 at Okeena Nursing & Rehabilitation. She was born August 28, 1947 to the late Stephen and Flonnie Baker. Bertie was a retired housekeeper, of 16 years, at West Tennessee Healthcare-Dyersburg Hospital. She was a loving woman who spread joy to everyone she met. She faithfully attended Emmaus Baptist Church, near Newbern, every Sunday and Wednesday until sickness overtook her. She loved everyone and would give you her last bite of food if you were hungry or the shirt off her back if you needed it. She was a kind soul, spirit, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother, greatly loved as "Nanny & MeMaw".

Funeral services for Ms. Bertie Lemonds will be held in the chapel of Dyersburg Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 6, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. Visitation will begin at 11:00 am. and interment will follow in Dyer County Memorial Gardens.

Ms. Donna Lynn Childress, of Jackson, passed away Wednesday, April 30, 2025 at West Tennessee Healthcare-Dyersburg Hospital. She was born December 8, 1969 to Lindsey Deaton and Barbara Kent. She was a devoted homemaker who loved time spent with family, especially her grandchildren. She is remembered for her happy-go-lucky personality and enjoyed fishing, cooking and trips to the beach with family and friends. She had the gift of a "Green Thumb" and loved to garden.

Donna is survived by her parents, a son Seth Childress and wife Brier-Ashley, her daughters Cortney Childress and Kaitlyn Speed and husband Austin Drummond and a brother Wade Deaton. She was greatly loved as "MiMi" by her grandchildren Adrianna, Braydon, Jayce, Brinley, Lanceton, McKenna Kennedi and was excited for the arrival of Reign and her great-grandchild, Weslynne. She is preceded in death by her sister Debbie Deaton.

Mrs. Deborah Rose Thomas, of Newbern, passed away Monday, April 28, 2025 at her home. She was born April 13, 1954 to the late John and Amaryllis Hooper. She is fondly remembered by her students for her dedication, spending 30 years as an elementary school teacher for Dyersburg City Schools. She was a long time member of First Baptist Church in Newbern where she participated in many ministries. In her free time, she loved following her grandchildren's activities and family trips to the beach.

Deborah is survived by her husband, Jeff Thomas, her daughters Emilee French, and husband Mike and Mary Kathryn Funderburk and husband Brian, her brother Johnny Hooper and sister Lee Ann Sikes. She was greatly loved as "Gran" by her grandchildren, Aaron and Clark French and Holland Rose Funderburk. She is preceded in death by her parents John Hurley Hooper and Amaryllis McDaniel Hooper.
