Mr. J.R. was an avid golfer, a former Magistrate of Dyer County, former Chief Deputy for Dyer County Sheriff's Department and former member of Tennessee Army National Guard. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII.

He received his medical degree from UT Memphis in 1956. He was a physician in pediatric practice and a member of the Dyersburg Methodist Hospital staff for 37 years, where he served in many capacities, including chief-of-staff. He was a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Northwest Tennessee Medical Society and the A.M.A. He also had a love of farming.
