Thomas Lyle Gillenwater

March 25, 1925 – October 30, 2021

Thomas Lyle "Gillie" Gillenwater age 96 passed away in Ripley, TN on October 30,2021. He was born in Madison, West Virginia where he grew up and lived in West Virginia, Michigan, Ohio, Florida, Illinois and Tennessee. Gillie was preceded in death by his parents Thomas E. and Nettie Owens Gillenwater, his brother Jack and sister Lucille Price Wheatley and stepson Marlin Hogue and step-sons-in-law Fred Oslund and Steve Barham. He had many occupations during his long life- musician, artist, sign painter, bus driver and photographer. He built over 200 homes and many public schools in Brevard County Florida in the early 1960's at the start up of the U.S. Space program near Kennedy Space Center. He had a large fence company in Chicago area, ran a restaurant and was a tomato farmer in Tennessee. Gillie is survived by his wife Peggy, six daughters, Pat Overstreet, Barbara Engel, Sharon Schneider Cozart (Jerry), Karen Hartgraves, Rita Fry (Bobby), Sandy Jennens (Al), three sons James "Jim" (Debbie), Tommy and Phillip. Two stepdaughters Barbara Barham and Donna Oslund. Many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Gillie had an enterprising mind, was self taught, had a quick wit and was always ready to share a good joke or story ( listening or telling ) of which he had many. He will be sadly missed. The family extends our thanks to the staff at Ripley Healthcare and Rehabilitation and Avalon Hospice for his care during his long illness. Honoring his request no funeral services will be held.

Paul D. Wells

March 10, 1947 – October 30, 2021

Paul Dewey Wells of Newbern, TN passed away at his residence October 30th 2021. Paul was born March 10, 1947 in Dyersburg, Tennessee. He was the son of the late J.L. Wells and Pauline Ashworth Wells. Paul enlisted in the Army in November 1965. He served in Vietnam with 2nd Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division where he was seriously injured in combat February 1967. He was medically retired from the Army. His awards and decorations include the Combat Infantry Badge, 2 Bronze Stars, 3 Purple Hearts, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal Paul enjoyed spending time with his wife and friends, perhaps the thing he enjoyed most was being a father, grandfather and uncle to his family. Paul was a member of Hess Lodge #93 F & AM. Masonic Rites will be at the funeral home. He is survived by his wife, Alice Davis Wells; two sons, Jay (Belinda) of Finley, TN, Eric (Tonya) of Dyersburg; one step-son, Danny James (Tina) of Newbern, TN; his Sister, Susan Elaine McCulloch (Ed Gordon) of Arnold, MO; three grandsons, Hunter and Jacob Wells, Brayden James; two nieces, Dee Bond, Jennifer Viar, both of Arnold, MO; and special great-nephew, Jake Matthews. Pallbearers will be Keith Jones, Tony Kirk, Tommy Childress, Jon Lancaster, John Baucom and Jordan Ramsey. Honorary pallbearer will be Scott Deal. Honor Guard will be provided by U.S. Army at Fort Campbell. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 3, 2021 in the Chapel of Curry Funeral Home officiated by Chaplain Jim Ennis with interment to follow in Dyer County Memorial Gardens. Barbara Sue Ezekiel

Barbara Sue Lovelace Ezekiel March 9, 1945-October 28, 2021 Barbara Sue (Lovelace) Ezekiel, age 76, died Thursday, October 28, 2021, in Germantown, Tennessee. She was born March 9, 1945, in Crockett County, Tennessee to the late John Robert and Martha (Sumerlin) Lovelace. After graduating from Crockett High School in Maury City in 1963, she married the love of her life, the late Lynn Ezekiel in August, who preceded her in death in 2000. Sue and Lynn lived in Chestnut Bluff outside of Halls for many years where they raised their two children, Jeff and Dawn. Both were active in Halls and the surrounding communities, as well as at Gates Baptist Church. She was also the proprietor of a beauty salon in her home for many years until she retired in 2000 to be a caretaker for her husband. Mama Sue, as she was known to so many, lived with a true servant's heart. A talented seamstress, hairdresser and beloved grandmother and mother, she is survived by her son, Jeffrey L. Ezekiel (Laura) and Dawn Ezekiel Ray (Tom) and four grandchildren: Taylor and Jordan Ezekiel and Tripp and Zane Ray. She also leaves behind two brothers: Robert (Elaine) Lovelace of Moscow and Gene (Deeann) Lovelace of Finley. Additionally, she leaves behind her many nieces and nephews whom she treated as her own children, as well as dear friends, in-laws and cousins. She loved her family fiercely and moved to Germantown in 2015 to be closer to her grandchildren and children. A passionate Christ-follower, she attended Crossroads Baptist Church in Eads. She loved with a selfless heart and spent her time giving to others and showing her love through food, sewing, positivity and encouragement. Her favorite things on this Earth were her four grandchildren, whom she doted over and spoiled senseless. She could ALWAYS be heard cheering for her grandchildren at soccer matches, baseball, football and basketball games, as well as dance competitions and anything they were taking part in at Briarcrest and in the Memphis area. She was truly their #1 fan. When she wasn't spending time with her family, she sewed for the Memphis Woman's Exchange, where her handiwork has been seen on some of Memphis' finest dressed children at Easter, Christmas and every special occasion in between. She was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals (of which she never missed a televised game unless it was to watch her grandchildren) and Memphis Tigers Basketball. She was never at a loss for words, often doling out advice to any and all she encountered, and always told you exactly what you needed to hear, even if it wasn't what you wanted to hear. She approached every situation with an unparalleled positivity, and truly lived by her favorite saying, "it is what it is." A visitation for Memphis area family and friends will be held Thursday, November 11 from 5:30pm till 7:00pm at Crossroads Baptist Church, 125 Houston Levee, in Eads. Viewing will be held Friday, November 12 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Halls Funeral Home in Halls, Tennessee, with the funeral following at 1 p.m. in the chapel, and burial at South Fork Cemetery in Chestnut Bluff. Wanda G. Brewer, 81, of Dyersburg, died Saturday, October 23, 2021 at her residence. Born April 7, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Jim and Lurlene Lowery Gibson. Wanda was an administrative assistant at Tupperware until she retired at the age of 38, to become a full time Mom. She married her childhood sweetheart, Billy F. Brewer on Valentines Day in 1959 and they shared 58 wonderful years together. They loved golfing together with close friends. She was also an avid tennis player for many years. In her later years, Wanda enjoyed working with her daughter, Jane, at Cricket Corner. Her great love extended, not only to her children and grandchildren, but to the community of family and friends of Halls and Dyersburg. She was a member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church.

In college at Union University, Ann met the love of her life Rev. Raymond "Buddy" Boston. She graduated from Union University in 1958 and began a career in education. While at Union, she was active in Chi Omega sorority, the Rutledge History Club and Who's Who. She was also an active member of the Dyersburg Chi Omega alumnae society. She served on the Board of Trustees for her beloved Union University. At First Baptist Church Dyersburg, she founded and served as the teacher for the Joy Sunday School Class for over twenty years.

Johnie Leon Nelson

Johnie Leon Nelson Jr. "John Boy" was born to Johnie Leon Nelson Sr. and the late Shirley Nelson (Vivian) in Valparaiso, Indiana on Tuesday, October 22, 1963. He was the second oldest and first son out of six children. Johnie attended school in Halls, TN and worked for Halls Gin Company for 17 years. He was also a general mechanic and was known by other as the person who could fix anything. On December 12, 1992 he married the love of his life and they raised eight children together. He accepted Christ and was a member of Bethesda Methodist Church. Johnie was given the childhood nickname "Bad Boy" when he was in school by his Uncle Dewight because he was always getting in trouble for fighting at school. To all who knew him growing up, Johnie most certainly lived up to his nickname. Johnie was known for his fun-loving personality and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. They had him wrapped around their fingers and got away with just about everything. He was proud to be a Papaw and talked about them to anyone who would listen. Johnie loved going to the beach with his daughter, teaching his other daughter how not to get in trouble (haha), fixing vehicles with his grandsons, fishing with his son, having talking sessions with granddaughters, and most of all his wife's cooking. He rarely met a stranger and was a simple man, with a simple touch, that allowed him to be known and loved by many. He did not believe blood made a person family. On October 12, 2021, Johnie departed this life and entered into eternal rest surrounded by his wife, son, and daughter in Oxford, Mississippi, after a courageous battle with Covid Pneumonia. He was preceded in death by his son, Johnie Leon Nelson III; mother, Shirley Nelson; sister, Lisa Nelson; and two brother-in-laws, Gene Pounders and Mike Ammons. He leaves to cherish his memory the following survivors: his wife, Joyce O. Nelson (Simpson) of Halls, TN; seven children: Gwinn (Chris)Dennis of Williamsburg, VA, Jeremiah (Amanda) Kilpatrick of Poplar Bluff, MO; Opal (Bobbi) Younger of Halls, TN; Vanessa, Crystal, Tiffany, and Danny Nelson; ten grandchildren-Chris Jr., Chaston, Caleigh, and Crysten Henson; Maki and Talayeh Dennis, Braylon and Alaina Kilpatrick, Izzy Young, Charlie Gracia, and others; his father, Johnie Leon Nelson Sr. of Halls, TN; three sisters- Marie Pounders and Sharon (Henry) Stephens both of Ripley, TN; and Wanda Harbor of Halls, TN; one brother, Bobby Nelson of Halls, TN; a host of nieces and nephews, bonus grandchildren, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Paul Anthony Thompson, age 54, of Ripley passed away Tuesday, October 12, 2021. Paul was born September 24,1967 in Ripley, TN. He is the son of the late Bobo and the late Vina (Willis) Thompson Sr. He was employed as a Factory Employee for Tennessee Electroplating. He is survived by his wife: April Michelle (Long) Thompson , two daughters: Ashley Thompson of Halls, TN and Searra Thompson of Ripley, TN, and three sons: Chris Thompson, Camdyn Thompson and Chad Reed all of Ripley, TN; Brother of three sisters: Janie O'Kelley of Brighton, TN, Loretta Wilkins of Holly Springs, MS and Nannette Thompson of Louisville, KY, and two brothers: Bobby Willis and Bobo Thompson Jr both of Ripley, TN; He also leaves one grandchild Kinslee Thompson. The funeral will be held 2:00 pm on Saturday, October 16 at Henning Facility Building, 1230 Hwy 87, Henning, TN with Bro.
